Supporting Your Posture Beyond Your Sports Massage in Southampton

I am often heard to say that it's what you do in between your treatments with me that really make a difference to your outcome.

I am also heard to say that sports massage is not just for sports people! A large number of the people that I treat are desk dwellers. Spending a long time seated at a desk can have your neck and shoulders crying but some simple, small adjustments can make a huge difference to how you feel. Put the following suggestions into practice at your desk and let them help reduce strain, tension and aches throughout the day.

  • Adjust the height of your chair and the backrest to properly support your posture. Ideally any chair that you spend a substantial amount of time in should be 5 point adjustable. Your lower back should be supported. If the lumbar support in your current chair is a little lacking, consider adding a cushion or pillow for extra low back support. Knees at right angles with feet planted on the floor. Arm rests should be adjustable to allow you to tuck yourself right in. Forearms should be able to rest comfortably on the desk.

  • The top of your monitor should be level with your eyes. The monitor should be about arms length away. Working on a laptop? Ideally upgrade to a desktop but as an absolute minimum, please get a second screen.

  • If you do have a desktop, an ergonomic keyboard and mouse can help to reduce strain on wrists and arms. If you are working on a laptop, a separate mouse can be easier to use than the touch pad - reducing tension from the arms.

  • Take frequent breaks to move from your desk. If you find yourself staring at the screen, the words not making sense, or you don't know what to write next a movement break can be as good for your mind and inspiration as it is good for your body. If you do know that you can sit at your desk for 2, 3 or 4 hours without moving then it's probably time to set yourself an alarm for every 30 minutes. Stand up and move around, refill your water bottle. When you sit back down again take a stretch before you touch the keyboard. Side bends, rotations, mindful movements of the head are all things that the body will appreciate.

  • Periodically, mix things up. Always use the mouse with your left hand? Move it to the other side. Your body will thank you, and it will be good for your brain. But don't do it when you are really busy, that will just be frustrating!

  • Finally, keep your desk clutter free and organised. A cluttered desk will give rise to a cluttered mind and that will show up as tension in the body.

Taking the time to set your desk up so it works for you will do much to support your spine, ease tension and discomfort in the neck and shoulders, and improve your overall well-being.
